Rick Smith Jr. LIVE (Penguin LIVE)

World famous Card Throwing – We will talk about the techniques I use to throw cards. We will talk about power, accuracy, how you can use this in an act, how you can use this to draw a crowd quickly, and show a few trick shots that have become popular with my recently viral video with youtube sensation Dude Perfect. We will take this even further and show different grips that can be used for soft and hard throws as well as accuracy and possible finger flicking flourishes that every magician should know.

The Martin Lewis Spinner Move- An effect to allow a playing card to pop out of the deck. I will take this very old effect and show the audience on how to use this trick for photo opportunities, card magic, all while breaking down different ways to use this effect and make it your own. I will be divulging some information that is not readily available on how to use this method in a way that is not typical that will even catch magicians off guard. We will also use this technique and show different ways of revealing a card.

Pop-up Cards- is another Finger flicking flourish that was created by Audley Walsh, popularized in the early 2000’s by Jeff Mcbride, and now one of myfeatured flicks that I use for both magic and flourishes that can be used in any stage magic act, etc.

Deep Dive into the Classic Force- There are many takes on the Classic Force, but for the first time I will go over the mechanics of the classic force showing a skill that I can fool 99% of the magicians that think they know how to perform this effect. I have studied this effect and have mastered it in a way that we can finally teach for the first time. I have never taught my rendition of the classic force on video and I feel that even although I am a card thrower I am a working magician and I feel that learning my way of performing this classic effect will be worth the price of admission.

Double Cheeseburger- A sandwich effect where a blue card appears between two red cards that have been examined and shown on both sides. As a double kicker ending, the blue card ends up matching the selected red card, then the blue back changes red and it’s actually the selected card, not a duplicate. Can be signed.

Bounce, Doh-Bounce- The Bounce, No Bounce effect, just done with Play-Doh. Play Doh doesn’t bounce, but when a magician uses magic it does.

Gou-Doh- A ball of Play-Doh becomes an edible cheese wheel. You know because Play-Doh is “fun to play with but not to eat”. So why not use magic to change that, create food from clay.

CrypTIC- An empty box of Tic-Tacs rattles as if there were some in it. When you open the container, you can dump some out. No rattle box or matches, sleeves can be rolled up. Examinable tic tac box.

Solution- A drink prediction where a random drink is selected from a bank. Your prediction seems wrong until the can is opened and the liquid inside the can is revealed to be the selected drink.

iFocus- You cause a spectator’s iphone screen to blur out of focus and then snap your finger and it goes back in focus. Like the gaff card effect, just on a spectator’s phone.

Tele/Path- An effect where you predict the last four digits of a random phone number created by your audience.

Hotbox- A selected card is lost in the deck, then the deck is put back in the box and placed in the spectator’s hand. The spectator then feels the box heat up without any source or means of heat other than “magic”. When the cards are removed, the selected card is burnt.

DIVE- A borrowed object (coin, ring, key) is thrown into a sealed bag with no slits or cuts. The gimmick is hidden in plain sight.

11 magic packed card routines that range from nearly self working to knuckle busting monsters. There is something for everyone, along with full credit to all of the sources that I referenced while developing these routines. You’re bound to discover some new tricks you’ll love.

Flash Cyclic Location- A number of cards are randomly chosen from the deck and their values fed into a calculator, and that number is then multiplied by a number taken from a die mentally rolled by your spectator. The sum total is then located by the magician.

Nice Tri Sweetie Pie- Two spectators sign two different cards, and a third spectator writes the date on yet another card. In one magical moment all three cards fuse into a single card which can be given away. This is a great alternative to the anniversary waltz for when you have no gaffs but still want to leave the audience with a real miracle.

Redivivus Revisited- A novel take on a classic packet effect- Twisting the Aces. Using any four of a kind and a genuinely surprising ending where the fourth card vanishes from the packet and reappears in the middle of the deck.

Direct Ace Cutting- Three different spectators cut three different packets, and everyone has cut to an ace. It’s fast, powerful, and easy to do. A great effect as an opener whenever approaching a table of three people to get everyone involved in the magic.

Rise-Rise-Rise Coda- The classic Marlo effect of Rise rise rise is a beautiful and methodically ambitious card effect. I’ve experimented with it for years. I’ll be sharing with you my thoughts on this effect and how I have turned it into a multiphase face up ambitious card that is as rewarding to learn as it is to perform.

21st Nervous Breakdown and 2112- The 21 card trick is my favorite card trick. What other magicians view as a children’s trick for lay people to perform, I view as one of the most beautiful effects in all of magic. I’ll teach you two variations of this trick that not only deconstruct and shuffle up this classic effect, but will get you as excited about it as I am.

Hofzinser’s Suit Selection- The spectator cuts off a small packet of cards and selects a card from that packet. They memorize the suit of that card. Magically the packet of cards the spectator cut off transforms from random cards into all 13 of the suit they chose.

Henweigh- A selected card appears between to jacks. As I put away the selected card it reappears between the two jacks. A second and then third card appears between the jacks and are placed on the table. The jacks are placed back in the deck and when the tabled cards are turned over the cards removed from between the jacks were the jacks themselves. This trick catches you audience completely off guard with it’s surprising finale.

Snowflake Assembly- Four kings gradually travel from packet to packet and assemble into a final packet. This challenging effect will teach you some new and exciting moves that you’ll add to many of your own packet effects. This one is a lot of work, but I think you will have a lot of fun learning it.

Untitled 3 of Clubs Trick Variation- The magician openly places a card on the table and has a spectator name their favorite card, the card is turned over matches the card they named. A second prediction is placed on the table and the second spectator names their favorite card. The prediction transforms into the first spectator’s selection, and the first selection is revealed to have transformed into the second spectator’s selection. A third card, chosen by the spectators then magically appears between the original two selections. Based on the 3 Clubs Trick by RW Hull, this is an opener I have used for years to hit my audience with a lot of magic and also get huge reactions.

Earth, Sky, Stars- Out Of This World is arguably one of the most popular card plots in magic. I’ll be sharing with you my approach to out of this world which starts with just a couple of cards, then a small packet, and then the entire deck. The audience is able to correctly divine the color of every single card in the deck, making no mistakes, building to an astonishing climax. This routine mixes multiple methods with psychology that gives the audience no way to back track to the secret.

Alexander Marsh LIVE ACT (Penguin LIVE)

Why You Should Never Play Cards with a Mentalist- Who says Mentalism with playing cards has to be boring?
The theme is all in the title ‘Why You Should Never Play Cards with A Mentalist’ as it demonstrates almost every trick in the mentalists arsenal (everything expect PK). I have been performing the act for 4 years, it is still a feature of my one-man show and a short version featured in my act in ‘Champions of Magic’ for several years. I created it because I was sick of other mentalists saying Mentalism with playing cards is boring so I tried to create the strongest and most direct mind reading act using nothing but playing cards!
Alexander Marsh takes his audience on a journey through almost every type of Mentalism effect and leaves them convinced that they really should never play card with a mentalist. As well as how each effect is achieved, Alexander will also discuss how and why he has structured the act how he has, and how this structure can be used to routine any effect, routine or full show.

Mind Reading of 5 Playing Cards- First he convinces his spectators he can expertly read their tells and reveal every single card in a poker hand.

Temporary Amnesia- Then he demonstrates his intimate knowledge of the human mind by causing a spectator to forget a thought-of-card and just as quickly brings the memory back. All with no sleight of hand, no hypnosis, and no stooging.

Tel-  Alex’s bold but practical billet technique to divine any 4-digit number.
3 Billets– Alex shares the work on his Billet Peek within a three person psychometry routine that makes the peek invisible.

Name A Card At A Given Number (2 methods)- Next he proves he really is a master of memory by rapidly memorising half the deck and naming the card at any given number and by knowing which randomly selected card has been moved in the pack. Alexander will even tip his method to allow a spectator to achieve this same minor miracle. All this is done using the simplest of methods and no memory work, allowing you to focus on your performance.

Card Calling/Memory of Half the Pack- The other half of the deck is distributed among the audience and having memorised one-half of the deck, Alexander names all these unseen cards getting the whole audience involved in the act. This requires the bare minimum of memory work and can be mastered in no time at all.

Card Prediction- Finally, in his inimitable style Alex gets a huge reaction for the revelation that he really did know a card merely being thought of all along. His handling and tips on using this often dismissed method has made many performers reconsider this classic tool.
